Now that the summer months are officially over it is time to welcome the fall season. In Hampton Roads, we can still feel the summer heat in September with the need for our air conditioning systems to be on full blast, but once October arrives the temperatures will see a significant drop. Here are some tips to help you prepare for the cooler fall temperatures.

Curtains

Instead of thin curtains or blinds, hang up some thick curtains or drapery to keep the cool air from seeping in through your windows. In the day time open your curtains so the sunlight comes in and acts as a natural heating element for your home.

Air Filters

Now that it is a new season your air filters should be cleaned and replaced. Your air conditioning system was on over drive during the sweltering Virginia summer which means your filters accumulated dirt and dust. When your air filters are regularly cleaned and maintained your heating and cooling system works more efficiently helping you save in energy costs. In addition, clean air filters are better for your health because you are breathing in the air it puts out.

Carpeting

Many people prefer the look of hardwood or tiled flooring. While aesthetically appealing and easier to keep clean without having to pull out the vacuum, hardwood and tiled flooring can get very cold during the fall and winter months. If installing wall to wall carpeting out of the question or out of your budget, you can add rugs, runners, or area rugs in high-traffic areas.

Heating Equipment Install, Repair, or Tune-Up

It is better to get your heating system repaired or tuned-up sooner than later especially when the cold months are upon us. You want to make sure everything is in proper working order and there are no fire hazards. A tune-up is definitely a must to ensure your heating system is running properly and warming your home efficiently without a large spike in your heating costs. An experienced technician can also recommend whether or not a repair or a new installation would be in your best interest.

Thermostat

If you don’t already have a thermostat or if your current thermostat is broken, now is the best time to install a thermostat. If the idea of future heating costs this fall and winter already has you stressed out then a thermostat is your wallet’s best friend. You can set your thermostat at a specific temperature for a specific length of time saving you a lot of money in the long run.

If you are unsure whether you need a maintenance, a repair, or a complete new heating system, then call a local HVAC company. A trained professional can go to your home and do an inspection to check the quality of your system to determine what actions should be taken.
